From Earth To Vessel
An exhibition that explores the subtle connections between the Earth, the Artist & the Vessel ~ Arts Society of Kingston, NY USA
September 7 – 29 2024
The selection of works in this exhibition is utilizing the same earthly material, clay. Although each exhibiting artist approaches the principal medium with different techniques and purposes, like wheel-throwing vs hand-building, functional vs sculptural, both of their processes involve deep listening. In other words, the premise is exploring the higher levels of receptivity to the subtle communication between the human body and the Earth as a whole, and the clay body as part of the Earth in the hands of artists. This transmutational process brings forth vessel forms infused with past-present-or-future timelines, from the realm of intangible into the world of matter.

Unity Vessels by Gülnar Babayeva
GÜLNAR BABAYEVA is a figurative sculptor & designer at her studio @caspianmuse, based in the Hudson Valley, NY. Originally from Azerbaijan, she moved to New York State in 2010 to study art and design thanks to the generosity of a local family. Babayeva has been sculpting the human form since 2012, and started her explorations in ceramic vessel design in 2020. Babayeva’s multidisciplinary nature as a creative explores the versatility of her chosen medium from the perspectives of designer and sculptor identities interchangeably.
Gülnar Babayeva brings representation as a sculptor and designer to the local arts communities with her active participation as an exhibiting artist, volunteer, board director, instructor and curator. In 2022 Babayeva was invited to curate and design her first invitational sculpture exhibition The OTHER Dimension, highlighting the works, primarily figurative & representational, by seven sculptors from the region. Babayeva was awarded the 2022 NYSCA Individual Artist Grant to pursue her artistic vision & mission of cultivating figurative sculpture locally. She is also an associate member of the National Sculpture Society. Sculptures from her 2021 debut exhibition Revival have been actively exhibited and acquired for private collections. Babayeva offers collaboration opportunities locally and remotely at Caspian Müse Studio.

Harvest Vessels by Kalsang Chompel
KALSANG CHOMPEL is a New York City based Tibetan Potter/Ceramicist. Kalsang nurtures an ardent interest in traditional Japanese, Korean and British cultures of pottery, yet believes strongly in the development of contemporary styles and forms of the craft. Coming from an immigrant refugee background, Kalsang’s inspiration in his work reflect multiple displaced identities of having traversed life in a continuous journey absorbing influences from various cultures, yet at the same time they are deeply rooted in his core personal artisan sensibility.
Kalsang’s vessels have the soft underpinnings of being stimulated from a greater cause yet they are indisputably distinct in holding their space and purpose in the universe. He believes in the art, beauty, and endless possibilities of handmade artisan crafts in this modern age that is overwhelmed with mass corporate reproduction. Kalsang’s functional art pieces can be used as everyday vessels to delight your senses or home decor that are visually pleasing and artfully therapeutic.
